Solvents not only make the polish viscosity thinner, and sometimes easier to apply, but it also speeds up the drying process. Solvents also make regular nail polish and permanent gel polish thicken and become difficult to work with, this happens every time the lid is off the polish bottle as the solvents evaporate. To make the polish workable again a nail polish thinner needs to be added to the thickened product.
